*ארוני, אראני m. pl. (prob. pl. of ארונא, so called from closing and opening like chests) name of certain plants growing in marshes and closing their leaves at nightfall. Sabb. 35b אדני חזו באגמא עורבי בדברא Ms. M. (ed. אדאני א״ עורבי . . . .; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l., Ar. הרני, Var. ארוני, Rashi ed. Sonc., Asheri a. R. Niss. early ed. אראני) in the desert you recognize the entrance of the Sabbath (on a cloudy day) by the ravens, in marsh-land you look out for arone.

ארוסין, אירוסין m. pl. (ארס) betrothal, prelimi- nary act of marriage, answering to the Roman sponsalia; promise in marriage, disting. fr. נישואין, or כניסה, mar- riage proper, the latter consisting in conducting the bride to the groom's permanent (or improvised) home. [The betrothal carrieswith it almost all the legal consequences of marriage, excepting some modifications mostly of a civil (pecuniary) character, and is, according to Talmudic usage, preceded by a benediction (א׳ ברכת), while the act itself is performed by the bride-groom (or his man- datary) delivering into the hands of the bride (or her mandatary, or her father, if she be a minor) an object representing any value not below the smallest coin (P'rutah), whereby the purpose of the delivery is stated and assented to by acceptance.] Keth. *ארז (אר, v. ארר; cmp. חרז) 1) to penetrate deeply, to taake deep root. - 2) to be prickly, dry, hard. Sabb. 155a דארזי זירין Zirin are called bundles of twigs which are hard. Ib. דא׳ כיפין; [oth. opin., v. ארזאl. Denom. אורזא, ארוזא, a. next ws.

ארז m. (b. h.) cedar. Tam. III, 5 א׳ של of cedar wood. - Pl. ארזים. R. Hash. 23a; Taan. 25b; a. e. - Metaph. prominent men, scholars. Sabb. 118b I planted א׳ חמשה five cedars (begot five sons who acquired renown). M. Kat. 25b, v. אזוב.

*ארזין m. (prob. plur. of ארז) box, chest (for collect- ing bones). Tosef Snh. IX, 8 (ed. Zuck. בארון, Var. בארזון). Treat. S'mah. ch. XII בא׳ בגלוסקמא (one word inserted by a glossator to explain the other). Ib. בידין (corr. acc.). [Tur Y. D. Abeluth 403; ארזים]

ארזלא (אורזילא), ארזילא, ערסל, ערסלא m. (dimin. of ערס, ערסא) cradle, hammock for watchmen in gardens. Targ. Is. I, 8; XXIV, 20 (h. מלונה). - Erub. 25b אר׳ כי דעבידא Ar. (ed. אור׳; Rashi ארזי׳; Tosaf. ערס׳) the roof of the shed has the shape of a cradle, i. e both sides slanting ttowards the centre.

ארזנאי m. pl. (v. ארזוניא P. Sm. 374, cmp. פרשניא Neub. Geogr. p. 396) of Arzania. Taan. 24b דא׳ ארבי Ar. (ed. דפרזינא דחיטין; Ms. M. דפרזינאי) ships of the Arza- nians. Fem. *ארזנייתא. Git. 70a א׳ חיטין Arzanian wheat (of a large size).
