גמרנא m. (Denom. of גמרא) a teacher of traditions. Pes. 105b.
גמש (cmp. כמש) to contract, bend. Yoma 67a Ms. M. 2 (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 20) רישיה דגמיש זימנין ליה חזי ולא sometimes the animal's head (in falling) is bent, and he (theman) cannot see the chord. Pa. גמיש same. Ib. ed. ולאו לרישיה ליה דג׳ זימנין אדעתיה the animal may bend its head, and the man may not think of looking after the chord.
גן, c. גנה, גינה f. (b. h.; גנן) a fenced-in place, garden. -- עדן גן paradise, place of future reward, opp. גיהינם. Pes. 54a; Ned. 39b; a. fr. -- Gen. R. s. 15 beg. מעדן גדול the garden was larger than Eden (Eden was a portion of the garden, ref. to Ez. XXXI, 9). Taan. 10a וכ׳ אחד וגן and the garden was one sixtieth portion of Eden. -- Gen. R. l. c. בגי׳ נתונה שהיא כפיגי like a spring in a garden. Kil. II, 2 גנה זרעוני garden plants. Ex. R. s. 31 שבגי׳ גלגל the wheel works of the well in the garden; a. fr. -- Trnsf. (cmp. hortulus a. אto~) woman. Pirke d'R. El. ch. XXI וכ׳ האשה אלא גן אין gan (Gen. III, 3) means woman who is compared to a garden (ref. to Cant. IV, 12), וכ׳ זו הגנה מה as a garden &c. Cant. R. to IV, 12 מתגניא והיא נעולה גנתי my consort (Israel) is closed (chaste), and yet defamed. -- Pl. גנות. Lev. R. s. 3, beg. better off is he who owns גינה one garden and &c. וכ׳ של ג׳ שנוטל ממי than he who takes other people's gardens on half-shares; a. fr. -- Gen. גנאי m. (גני) disgrace, shame, blame; obscenity. Ab. Zar. 46a a byname לג׳ of reproach, (cacophemistic, opp. לשבח). Kidd. 33b; Y. Shek. V, 49a bot. לג׳ אמר חד one says 'they looked after Moses (Ex. XXXIII, 8) with the purpose of faultfinding; Tanh. Ki Thissa 27. Meg. 25b וכ׳ בג׳ . . המקראות כל words in the Torah which, as they are written (v. כתיב), have become obscene, are in reading changed &c. (שגל changed into שכב &c.). Ber. 33b לו הוא ג׳ it would be offering an insult to him; a. fr.
