זהם (b. h.; cmp. זהה) [to be glistening; cmp. צהן a.
צחח)] to be filthy, smell ofensively, be offfensive. -- Part.
זוהם, or part. pass. זהום. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 41c bot. אמר ר״ל
ז׳ ככוס (not בכוס) R. L. says, It is like drinking out of
an offensive cup; וכ׳ ז׳ בכוס השותה he who drinks (sacred
wine &c.) out of &c. Y. Nidd. IV, end, 51b זהום נידה דם
(Tosef. ib. IX, 10 זוהם; Bab. ib. 65b) the blood of a men-
struant is sticky (or ill-smelling).
Pi. זיהם 1) to smear plants with rancid oil for keep-
ing off vermin, [oth. opin.; to cover a wound in a tree
iwith dung and tie it up.] Shebi. II, 4. Y. ib. 33d (expl.
מזהמין of Mish.) מתלעין to keep the worms of. Ib. המזהם
וכ׳ אינו oiling a plant is merely like appointing a watch-
man (it does not advance growth). Y. Sabb. VII, 10a top,
v. בחל II. -- Part. pass. מזוהם, f. מזוהמת ll-smelling, filthy,.
ofensive. Bekh. VI, 12 ומז׳ and an animal of offensive
smell or sight. Ber. 53b מז׳ an offensive-looking priest.
Y. Gitt. VIII, 49d top מלפניו היא מז׳ she is disgusting to
himt(on account of her conduct);a. e. -- Pl. מזוהמים, מזוהמין;
fem. מזוהמות. Ber. l. c. מ׳ ידים smelling hands (after a.
meal, when not perfumed). Lev. R. s. 16; Esth. R. to
III, 1 וכ׳ מ׳ . . . מה as ordure is offensive, so is he (the
leper); a. e. -- 2) to declare unft for priestly or levitical
service (or connection), to reyect. Bekh. 47a וכ׳ מזהמין אין
the child is not rejected (as the child of a gentile). --
Y. Yeb. X, 11a; XIII, 13d bot. אותה מזהמין בד ואין but
the court does not declare her unfit to marry a priest. ---

**Ilif. הזהים to become unfit for ofering through offen-
siveness. Pesik. Vayhi, p. 10a הזזהימו לא (perh. to be read
הוזהמו Hof.; (Yalk. Num. 713 הוזמו, expl. חוסמו, corr. acc., or
הוממו as Num. R. s. 12, end, a. e., v. Bub. note to Pesik. l. c.).
זהם ch. same. Part. pass. זהים q. v. Pa. זהם to create aversion, to sicken. Lev. R. s. 16 (to the leper) ברייתא תזהם לא (ed. Wil. תזהום, read תזהים) do not sicken people with thy sight. Itthpe. אזדהם, thpa. אזדהם 1) to be soiled, to empty the bowels. Targ. Ps. CVI, 20. -- 2) to become offensive. Ab. Zar. 26a וכ׳ מיזדהמנא לא I do not desire to become offensive to my husband (get ungainly through nursing).
זהר (b. h.; cmp. זהה) 1) to shine; v. זהור, זהורית. - 2) to look out, beware, be strict (corresp. to b. h. שמר); v. זהיר. Pi. זהר to brighten. Midr. Till. to Ps. X0, 16 וזדו and brightened his countenance. Nif. הזהר (=b. h. השמר) to be careful, be strict; to beware, take heed. Ber. 8b בורידין הזהרו be careful to cut the jugular veins, v. וריד. Ib. וכ׳ בזקן ה׳ beware of disregarding an old man who &c. Ned. 81a עניים בבני ה׳ וכ׳ take heed of (do not disregard) the children of the poor; a. fr. Hif. הזהיר to caution, foreawarn, esp. to prohibit by a. special law, v. אזהרה. Yeb. 22b, a. e. הדין מן מזהירין אין a aw derived from analogy (v. דין) is not considered a. specitie aw on which pumshmen can be execued after due warning. Zeb. 106b, a. e. ה׳ אאכ ענש לא the Bible text did not pronounce punishment without having ex- pressed a warning (thou shalt not' &c.); a. fr. Hof. הוזהר to be forewarned, to be forbidden from doing (by a special law). Yeb. 84b וכ׳ הוזהרו לא there is no specific law prohibiting women of legitimate birth to marry men of illegitimate birth. -- Part. מוזהר, f מוזהרת. Ib. מ׳ שהאשה מלמד (the repeated expression, 'they shall not take', Lev. XXI, 7) intimates that woman is included with man in the prohibition; ib. מ׳ היא מ׳ דהוא היכא כל wherever the man is cautioned not to marry, the woman (in the same social relation) is cautioned; a. fr.
