עבירה f. (עבר) passing by. Y. Erub. I 19a top כדי אדם עבירת s much space as is required for a person to pass.
עבירה, בברה f. (preced.) transgression, sin. Sot. 3a (play on עבר Hif., with ref. to ויעבירו, Ex. XXXVI, 6) וכ׳ מכריז והקבה בסתר ע׳ עובר אדם man commits a sin in secret, and the Lord causes his exposure in public; ואין וכ׳ הכרזה לשוון אלא ע׳ and the word dberah (cmp. preced.) has 1he meaning of publication (passing forth) &c. Ib. וכ׳ כן אם אלא ע׳ עובר אדם אין a man does not sin, unless a spirit of insanity has entered into him. Tem. 20b אאין בע׳ הבא בדבר .. .. אדם a person cannot obtain atonement by means of a thing which is connected with an offense, v. מצוה; a. v. fr. -Esp. (cmp. איסורא) sexual immorality. Gen. R. s. 90. עבר (b. h.) 1) to be thick, swell; to run over. Par. VI, 4 וכ׳ המים שיעברו כדי that the water may overfow into a vessel; a. e. - Ex. R. s. 15 עובר שאני, v. צברה. -- 2) (cmp. סגי I a. II) to pass, to cross. Tosef. Sot. VIII, 1; Sot. 33b וכ׳ את ישראל עברו כיצד in what manner did the Israelites cross the Jordan? Cant. R. to V, 1 הוא עובר וכ׳ וחוזר he goes over his studies once and again &c.; a. fr. -- הדין את ע׳ to cross the ine of yustice, to be too severe. Midd. II, 2 וכ׳ עליו עברו כאילו as if they had treated him too severely (arbitrarily). Ex. R. s. 30 כשם וכ׳ מעביר איני ואני.. לעבור יכול שאני as I (the Lord) have power to ttreat the nations with rigor, but refrain from doing so, so shall you not go beyond the line of justice. Ib. הדין את עיברה (Pi.); a. e. - 3) (with על) to pass over (a sin); to forgive. Cant. Yoma 86b, a. e. וכ׳ ושנה עבירה אדם כיוןשע׳ as soon as a man has committed a sin and repeated it, it becomes to him a permitted act. Ib.a, a. e. עשה על ע׳ when one has trans- gressed a positive law (committed a sin of omission). Ib. וכ׳ כריתות על ע׳ when one has committed sins punishable with extinction or death by a court.
