Robert Loftus Tottenham, and grand- daughter of Lord Robert Ponsonby Tottenham, Bishop of Clogher (son of Charles, first Marquess of Ely), and has issue, I. Rosa Sandra Dorothea, 6. 1878. II. Lucy Elizabeth Madeline, b. 1880. The Hon. A. C. Onslow was educated at Westminster and Trinity College Cambridge (B.A. 1864). He was called to the bar 17th November, 1868. Ho was attorney-general of British Honduras, 1878-80, and of We3tern Australia 1880-3. He was appointed chief justice of that colony, July, 1883, and administered the government during the absence of the governor in England, 1884-5, and again in 1891-2. Hincacic The family of Onslow was anciently seated in Shropshire, where it enjoyed exten- sive possessions ; and in the reign of Henry III it assumed its surname from the lordship of Ondeslow (so styled, in Domcsday-Eook, but now written Onslow), situated within the liberty of Shrewsbury. Edward Onslow, of Onslow, m. Anne, daughter of Eiehard Houghton, of Hough- ton, CO. Lancaster, by ^hom he had four Bons ; the second of wliom, EoGER Onslow, of Shrewsbury, m. Jlar- garet, daughter of Tliomas rAiNU, by whom he had two sons, Fnlk, clerk of the parlia- ment in the reign of Queen Elizabeth ; and EicHAED Onslow, barrister-at-law, who was successively recorder of the city of London, attorney-general of the Duchy of Lancaster, solicitor-general and speaker of the House of Conmious. This eminent person had a grant of the convent of Black- friars, in the city of London, where he resided. He m. Catl nrine, daughter and heir of Eiehard Harding, of Knoll, co. Surrey, and dying in 1571, was i. by his eldest son, Egbert Onslow, at whose decease, umn., the estates passed to his brother. Sir Edward Onslow, Knt., of Knoll, co. Surrey, who m. Isabel, daughter of Sir Thomas SiUELEr, Knt., of I'reeton Place, in the same co., and was s. by his eldest son, Thomas Onslow, who d. in minority, wlien the next brother. Sir EifHAED Onslow, Knt., succeeded. This gentleman served in three parliaments for the CO. Surrey, and espousing the party- opposed to the measures of Charles I, was one of the select committee appo nted, in 1657, to attend upon Cromwell, and to receive his doubts and 8cru])les touching the assump- tion of the regal ottice. Upon this occasion, Sir Eiehard, in a very remarkable speech, urged Cromwell to a^^sume the royal designa- tion with the supreme authority. He con- tributed, however, to the restoration of the exiled monarcli, and served for the town of Giuldford in the Convention which recalled Charles II. Sir Eiehard m.
