This family is a cadet branch of the great ducal Louse of AthoU and springs from, John, third Duke or Atholl, K.T., who w.his cousin, the Lady Charlotte, sole heiress of her father, James, second Duke of Atholl. Her Grace succeeded ber father in the barony of Strange and the sovereignty of the Isle of Man ; but iu 1765, their graces disposed of tins sovereignty, which they had derived from Sir John Stanley, Knt. (t:> whom it had been granted in 140(3 by Henry IV), to the Jiritish Government for £70,000, reserving, however, their landed interest on jiaynient of £101 lbs. lid., annually, and rendering two falcons to the Kings and l^ueens of England upon their coronation.
