JAMES PURVES COOK CURDIE, of Tamwortli Station, Hughenden, Queensland, b. 30th November, 1835; m. at Erinvale, Warwick, Queensland, 28th January, 1890, Agnes Matilda, fifth daughter of John Armstrong, of Erinvale. Utneagc. In the 12tli century, three brothers came from the north of Ireland, and settled in the west of Scotland. Their names were Laoman, Lauchlan, and Ciu'arty, or Curartncy. The first settled in the west of Comal, in the dis- trict now known as Lamont, from the name of the family, the second to the north of Lamont, in the district now known as Strath- lauchlan, and the third settled in Bute. While representatives of Laoman and Lauch- lan still possess the lands first held by them, the representatives of Curartney have been scattered. Baron McKirdy, of Fubas, in Bute, appears to have sold his lands to the Bute family some time between 1630 and 1660, and between these two dates, a younger son of his went to Arran, as the Rev. James McKu'dy, vicar of Kilmoi-y, in Arran, from whom James Purves Cook Curdie is lineally descended. The Rev, James Curdie, D.D. (Mr. J. P. C. Curdie's grand uncle), sometime rector of St. Ann's, Jamaica, and afterwards vicar of Henley-on-Thames, co. Oxford, Eng- land, dropped the prefix of Mac from the name, adopting the form of Curdy or Curdie, which is in reality the same name as Court, Courtney, etc., which are still common in Ire- land. DoKALD CuEDiE, of Stiddery, Arran, Scotland, by Mary CuAWFrRD, his wife, of Ai-ran, Scotland, had issue, eight sons and two daughters, none of whom were m. except, I. Daxiel, of whom presently. I. Mary, m. Mr. Mackinnon, and had issue, Daniel, of Marida Yallock, Terang, Victoria, who d. at Marida Yallock, 19th February, 1889, aged 71 years. II. Janet, m. Archibald Russell, of Ai'drossan, Scotland, and had issue, two daughters and two sons, one of whom is Dr. Russell, of Campbeltown, Scotland. The only son to leave issue, Daniel Cuedie, M.D., of Tandarooke, Cobden, Victoria, J. P., and sometime presi- dent of the shire council, was b. in Arran, Scotland, 9th January, 1810 ; emigrated to Australia in 1839, and settled at Tandarooke, in Victoria, 1840; m. 16th August, 1853. Frances, daughter of James Pubves, of Thurdistoft, Caithness, Scotland, and d. 22nd February, 188-4, having had issue, besides two daughters, who d. in infancy, 1. James Pukves Cook, of whom we treat. and D.L, for Surrey, Major in the Surrey Militia; ui. first, 18th May, 1789, Lydia Sarah Genevera, daughter of Edward Nouese, of Stanstead, Essex, and d. May, 1852, having by her, who d. 8th August, 1818, had issue, I. Jolin Robert, of Richmond House, Twickenham, of Ballindoney, co. Wexford, and of Beaulieu, Jersey, Captain in the Rifle Brigade (served in every engagement from Corunna to Waterloo, and was twice wounded), J. P. and D.L. for Surrey, and J. P. CO. Wexford, b. 1st December, 1791 ; m. 13th January, 1823, Williamza Caroline Mary, third daughter of Colonel Lorenzo SIooEE, of the Battleaxe Guards, by Henrietta, his wife, only daughter of Sir Stephen Theodore Jansen', Bart., and d. 4th December, 1866, having by her, who d. 18th November, 1870, had issue (see Bueke's Landed Oentry). II. Thomas, a retired Major-General, late Lieutenant-Colonel, R.E., for many years A.D.C. to General Sir George Don, Governor of Gibraltar, afterwards in command of the Island of Jersey, h. 1st July, 1795 ; m. Fanny, daughter of Colonel Maclb, and left issue, three sons and four daughters. The eldest sou, John, was late of the 95th Regiment, and the second, William Thomas, b. 11th June, 1838, is brigadier- general on the staff in India, colonel in the army, late of the Royal Artillery, and companion of the distinguished service order. I. Lydia, authoress of Hpisodes of Insect Life, etc. Mr. Thomas Budgen m. secondly, the daughter of Baieman, and niece of Sir John Bateman, and of Mrs. Halton, of Wingfield Manor, Derbyshire, and by her had issue, III. Edward Hugo, of the 82nd Regiment, served through the Crimean war, and the whole of the Indian Mutiny, afterwards on the staff in India. II.
