Tho.m.s AEcnEit, of Woolmers, Longford, Tasmania, was the first of the family to arrive in that colony, lie was the second son of WiLLTAjr Auciife, who d. at Brickendon, Longford, Tasmania, 3rd Jan- nary, 183.3, aged 79 years, and younger brother of the late William Archer, of Bricliendon, Tasmania, J. P. (see that familij). He was h. at Hertford, England, 179U,' and left for Sydney, 1811. He was made a clerk in the Commissariat Department in February, 1812. In the following year he was sworn a justice of the peace, and sent to Tasmania in charge of the Commissariat Department, and appointed a magistrate of the territory in 1816, and shortly after a Deputy Assistant Commissary General. At the time of the establishment of the Legislative Conncil in 1827, he was appointed to a seat by the Governor and continued a member for about twenty years. Thomas Archer at one time owned the estates of Woolmers, Fairfield and Jiesidenre — LauncesI Kstotes — Woolmers. Panshanger, being a bloi'k of over 3L000 acres, and of Cheshunt, near Deloraine, which consisted of 10,000 acres. The followiig extract from a despatch of Governor Sorell's to Governor Slacquaric testifies to his eminent qualifications as a Government officer : — " Hobart Town, 'Ith October, 1819. I beg leave upon this occasion to notify to your ex- cellency, in the strongest terms, the satisfaction which 1 have felt in the correct and lareful performance of his duties, which has charac- terised Mr. Archer, during two years and a half that he has had the charge successively of the Commissariat Department in the two set- tlements under my authoi'ity, the last twenty months of which at Hobart Town." Mary, daughter of Major Abdot, Judge Advocate of Jdobart Tonii, and afterwards Commandant at Launceston and d. at Wool- mers, 17th January, 184-1, and left issue by her, wlio d. Sth March, 1874, one son and one daughter, Thomas Chalmers, of whom presently. Louisa, m. Thomas Eeibey Ahtuur, of Longford, Tasmania. The only son, Thomas Chalmers Archer, of Woolmers, Longford, Tasmania, J. P., was i. there 30th November, 1840, and m. 4th January, 1802, Louisa Kate, only daughter of George Cathcart, of Launceston, Tasmania, son of John Cathcart, of London, merchant, and cousin of the late Sir John Andrew Cathcart, Bart., of Carlton (vee Burke's Peerage and Baroiietaije).
