Skul Buk Abidhan.—A very good Dictionary for beginners — the meanings are in Bengali and are very concise. 24. Shabdartha Pr&kdshdbhidh&n, Digambar Bhatter- jea's Dictionary, E. Ai. pp. 216, 6 as., gives 900 words. 25. VOCABULARY of Elegant Words, Barnamala Abidhan. 3rd pt. Pr. P., pp. 52, 1,200 words. 26. Shabdambudhi, ADEA'S BENGALI DICTION- ARY, 1854, pp. 604, 2 Rs. 8 as., Roz. & Co. The whole of this edition of 2,000 copies has been nearly exhausted in a year, it contains 28,000 Bengali words with their meanings taken from Morton's, Carey's, Radhakant Devas and Ram Chandra's Dic- tionaries. This Dictionary is a noble monument of the co- piousness and expressiveness of the Bengali language, and ought to be in the hands of every student of Bengali, though the meanings are only in Bengali, yet it may be useful as a work of synonyms to a European. 27. SANSKRIT DICTIONARY, Amarararthe Didi- thi, P. C P., in the press : will contain about 300 pp., on the plan of Colebrooke 8 Amra Kosh. 28. SANSKRIT AND BENGALI DICTIONARY, Amra Kosh, St. P., pp. 138, 1854. Innumerable editions of this have been published, it is the Johnson of Bengali, com- posed 1,000 years ago by a Buddhist, gives the words accord- ing to the subjects and is very useful for supplying synonyms. T. Colebrooke in 1813 translated the Sanskrit original into Eng- lish. Designed to make natives better acquainted in a short time and in a rational way with their own language, by giving them the Etymology of the language from Sanskrit, in the same way as boys in England learn the Latin Etymology of English words.
