GRAMMAR. 21 they did not understand, the value of the Mugdabodh is in inverse ratio to its size, as the rules of Sanskrit Grammar have been comprized in 1,000 short and very admirably con- structed sentences. Dr. Carey and Mr. Forster have trans- lated this work into English, as has also Mr. Wollaston. In 1820 Rev. J. Pearson published MURRAY'S ENGLISH GRAMMAR in Bengali, pp. 103, 2 Rs. Sir C. Haughton published a Grammar in 1821, clear but meagre, 15 Rs. per copy, very good on the prepositions and the connection of Sanskrit with Bengali. In 1822 appeared the Inglish Darwin, pp. 201, Hindustani P., an Anglo Bengali Grammar by Ram Chandra ; one third of it treated of the variations in English pronunciation. The same year produced also a Grammar by Gan- gakisser. In 1823 appeared the Bhasha Vyeaharan, pp. 66, the writer wished to his countrymen " topass quietly over the sea of words in order to read the Shastras. The same year was published an English Grammar in Bengali. In 1824 the School Book So- ciety published the Vyeaharan <Stfr,pp. 171, a GRAMMAR OF SANSKRIT in Bengali, by Madhav Chandra, a Nuddea Pandit, who wished to facilitate the study of Sanskrit, but it was writ- ten too much after the model of the old Grammars. In 1 826 Rammohan Roy published a Grammar in Eng- lish, which he circulated gratis, in order to help Englishmen to study Bengali. In 1833 J. C. Marshman published a trans- lation of an abridgment of Murray's English Grammar. In 1834 Joy Gopal Tarkalankar published the Chandar Manjari, Ser P., 4 as. In 1840 Bhagavadchandra published a Sdr Sangraha, or Grammar of Elegant Bengali, which passed quickly into a second edition, composed after the Sanskrit model. In 1846 J. Robinson published a translation of Carey* 8 Anglo Bengali Grammar y pp. 109; 1 Re. It simplifies Carey's, and gives a list of 500 Sanskrit roots used in Bengali, with their meaning in Bengali. 95. An excellent Grammar of Classical Bengali, shewing its Grammatical connection with the Sanskrit; it is particu- larly good in explaining the rules of Sandhi. 96. BRAJAKISHOR'S BENGALI GRAMMAR, BrajakUhor Byedkaran, pp. 145, 1st ed. 1840, 2nd ed. 1853, 8. b. ^ 8., 8 as. the author was a Pandit of Halishar of the Medical Caste, be professes to make his Grammar "the shadow of the Sanskrit Grammar,** learned but not as easy forbeginners as other Grammars.
