This year the heathens first remained through the winter in Sheppey. And the same year King Æthelwulf made a grant of the tithe of his lands throughout all his kingdom, for the love of God and for his own soul's eternal welfare. And this year he went to Rome with much pomp, and he abode there 12 months; then he journeyed homeward, and Charles King of France gave him his daughter named Leothete for his Queen; and after this he came to his people, and they rejoiced thereat. And in about 2 years from the time he came into France, he died, and his body lieth at Winchester; he reigned 18 years and a half.
