a.

1. a, in an accented syllable, becomes ă, so soon as that syllable becomes through inflection unaccented:

eŭ tac, ‘I am silent;’ eŭ tăcuĭ, ‘I was silent.’
el tace, ‘He is silent;’ tăcere, ‘silence’ (noun).
barbă, ‘beard;’ bărbat, ‘man.’

etc.

2. a becomes ă in the plural of many words, even though the accentuation is unchanged:

carte, ‘book;’ cărțĭ, ‘books.’
parte, ‘part;’ părțĭ,
ogra, ‘yard;’ ogrăḑĭ,
sabie, ‘swrod;’ săbiĭ,

etc.

e.

e is often modified into ĕ in the singular of nouns and in the conjugation of verbs:

pĕr, ‘hair;’ pe.
rĕŭ, ‘bad;’ reĭ.
mĕr, ‘apple;’ mere.
a vede, ‘to see;’ eŭ vĕd, ‘I see.’
eŭ vĕḑuĭ, ‘I saw;’ vĕḑĕnd, ‘seeing.’

etc.
