ROUMANIAN GRAMMAR.

Imperfect.

eŭ vedém, ‘I saw.’ eŭ credém, ‘I believed.’
tu vedéĭ, tu credéĭ,
el vedea, el credea,
noĭ vedém, noĭ credém,
voĭ vedéṭĭ, voĭ credéṭĭ,
eĭ vedéŭ. eĭ credéŭ.

We know that é with the accent is equivalent to the diphthong ea, but as é for ea cannot be written at the end of a word, we have—

el credea (not credé). el vedea (not vedé).

Simple Perfect.

eŭ vĕḍuĭ, ‘je vis.’ eŭ creḍuĭ,
tu vĕḍuṣĭ, tu creḍuṣĭ,
el vĕḍu, el creḍu,
noĭ vĕḍurăm, noĭ creḍurăm,
voĭ vĕḍurăṭĭ, voĭ creḍurăṭĭ,
eĭ vĕḍu. eĭ creḍu.

There are many verbs ending in e short which instead of uĭ take eĭ for the simple perfect, and change the last consonant to s; so a merge, ‘to go,’ has not its simple perfect eŭ merguĭ, but—

eŭ merseĭ, ‘I went.’ noĭ mereserăm,
tu merseṣĭ, voĭ merserăṭĭ,
el merse, eĭ merseră.

Thus:

a scrie, ‘to write;’ perfect, eŭ scrisseĭ.
a duce, ‘to bring;’ perfect eŭ dusseĭ.
