June 19, 1777, and succeeded his cousin, May 26, 1835 ; was a Governor of the Charterhouse and High Steward of the University of Oxford : m. 1st, Nov. 29, 1804, Lady Harriet Leslie, daughter of Sir Lucas Pepys, Bart, and Eliza- beth, (in her own right) Countess of Rothes, (she d. 1839), having had issue four sons and one daughter; 2ndly, Jan. 30, 1849, Elizabeth Ruth, (laughter of the Rev. John Middleton Scott ; and d. March 19, 1859, without having had any issue from 2nd marriage. DEVON, Countess of, ELIZABETH RUTH, daughter of the Rev. P. for Cambridge University, 1829 31, for Malton, 1831, and for North Derbyshire, 18314 ; was Chancellor of the University of London, 1836 56, and Lord Lieut, of Lancashire, 1855 8, in which latter year he was appointed Lord Lieut, of Derbyshire. Has been Chancellor of the University of Cambridge since 1861 ; is High Steward of the boroughs of Derby and Cambridge ; a Magistrate for Lancashire and Sussex, and President of Owen's College, Manchester : married (1829) Lady Blanche Georgiana Howard, 4th daughter of the 6th Earl of Carlisle, K.G., (this lady died, 1840), and has issue, living, ons, Spencer Compton, Marquess of Harrington, P.C. M.P. LL.D.; 6.1833; was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, (B.A. 1852, M.A. 1854, Hon. LL.D. 186-2) ; wa* attached to Earl Grariville's Special Embassy to Russia, 1856, and proceeded to St. Petersburg on the occasion of the Coronation of Alexander II. 1857; was a Lord of the Admiralty (March to April) 1863; Under Secretary for the War Department, 18636; Secretary of State for War (Jan. to July) 1866, Postmaster-General, 186870, and Chief Secretary for Ire- land, 1870 4 ; Captain in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry, 185273. Is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Derbyshire and Lancashire, and Hon. Col. of the 2nd Derbyshire Militia. Sat as M.P. for North Lancashire 185768, when he was an unsuccessful candidate; hns sat as M.P. for New Radnor (L.) since 1869. Elected Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons, Feb. 1875.
