DEVONSHIRE, Duke of, His Grace's predecessor in the Earldom of Burlington was his grandfather, George Augustus Henry, 1st Earl of Burlington and 1st Baron Cavendish. He was b. March 31, 1754 : m. Feb. 27, 1782, Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Charles, 7th Earl of Northampton (sbe d. 1835) ; and d. May 9, 1834, having had issue four sons and two daughters. His Grace's predecessor in the dukedom of Devon- shire was his cousin, William Spencer, K.G. P.C. D.C.L. 6th Duke of Devonshire and Baron Clifford. He was b. May 21, 1790, and succeeded his father, July 29, 1811 : was Lord Lieut, of Derbyshire, and High Steward of the Borough of Derby; d. unmarried Jan. 17, 1858, when the Barony of Clifford fell into abeyance between his sisters and co-heiresses, the Dukedom falling to the present Peer. DXGBY, BARON. (DIGBY.) EDWARD ST. VINCENT DIGBY, 9th Baron, son of Sir Henry Digby, G.C.B. an Admiral in the Royal Navy, and Com- mander- in- Chief at Sheerness. Born June 21st, 1809 ; succeeded his cousin, Edward, in 1856; was educated at Harrow; was sometime Lieut, in the 9th Lancers ; appointed Capt. Dorsetshire Yeomanry Cavalry 1858, and was Lieut. -Col. Com- mandant of that Corps 1866 70 : married (1837) Lady Theresa Anne Maria Fox Strangways, who died 1 874, eldest From God, not Fortune. daughter of the 3rd Earl of Ilchester, and has issue, living, Sons, Edward Henry Trafalgar, b. 1846 ; appointed Ensign and Lieut.
