LL.D. of Cam- without changing. bridge, 1864) ; called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn, 1819, and is a Bencher of his Inn ; sat as M.P. for Downton, 1830, for Hampshire, 183157 ; was Speaker of the House of Commons, 1839 57 ; and 2nd Church Estates Commissioner, 1858 9 ; has been an Ecclesiastical Commissioner since 1859, and Governor of the Isle of Wight, and of Carisbrooke Castle since 1857, Lieut. -Col. Hants Yeomanry since 1831, and Hon. Lieut. -Col. since 1868. Is Yeomanry Aide- de-Camp to the Queen, with the rank of Colonel in the Army, a Trustee of the British Museum, a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Hampshire, Chair- man of the Hampshire Quarter Sessions, and High Steward of Winchester : married (1817) Emma Laura, 2nd daughter of Samuel Whitbread, Esq. M.P. by Lady Elizabeth, daughter of the 1st Earl Grey, K.G. (this lady died, 1857), and has issue, living, Daughters, Emma Laura. Helena, m. 1851, Sir Henry Paulet St. John Mildmay, 5th Bart. F.R.S. b. 1797-, was educated at Eton, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, (B.A. Senior Wrangler, 1818, M.A. Fellow of his College, 1821), a Member of the Senate of the University of London; called to the Bar at the Inner Temple, 1824, and made a Bencher 1856; was Under- secretary for the Colonies, 1833, a Poor Law Commissioner, 1834, M.P. for Petersfield, 18304, Joint Assistant- Secretary to the Board of Trade, 1841 ; Deputy Clerk of the Parliaments, 184856, and Clerk of the Parliaments, 185675 ; held for some years the offices of Civil Service Commissioner and Church Estates Commissioner . m. 1824, the 5th daughter of Ichabod Wright, Esq.
