Born April 26th, 1821; succeeded his father the 3rd Mar- quess of Londonderry as Earl Vane 1854, and his half-brother as Marquess, 1872; educated at Eton, and at Balliol College, Oxford (B.A. 1844, M.A. 1867). Sat as M.P. for North Durham, 184754; is a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Durham, Merionethshire, and Montgomeryshire, a Metuenda corolla draconis. Magistrate for Flintshire and the North Fear the dragon's crest. Riding of Yorkshire. Col. Durham Militia, and Lieut.-Col. Commandant 2nd Durham Volunteer Artillery Brigade; has received the Order of St. Alexander Newski of Russia; is Col. of the Seaham Volunteer Artillery Corps: married (1846) Mary Cornelia, only daughter of the late Sir John Edwards, Bart., and has issue, living, Sons, Charles Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, b. 1852 ; educated at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford; appointed Capt. 2nd Durham Volunteer Corps, 1868, Major, 1869. Was Lord Lieut, of Down, 1845 64, a Lord of the Admiralty, 1828. and Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, 18345, sometime Col. 4th Down Militia, and a Magistrate for co. Down. He m. 1846, Lady Elizabeth Frances Charlotte Jocelyn, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Roden, and widow of the 6th Viscount Powerscourt, and d. Nov. 1872, without issue.
