MAYO, Earl of, His lordship's predecessor was his father, Richard Southwell, K.P., G C.S.I., P.C., LL.D., 6th Earl. He was b. Feb. 21, 1822, and succeeded his father 1867. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A. 1844, M. A. 1851, LL D 1852) Was Chief Secretary for Ireland 1852, 185S 9 ; and with a seat in the Cabinet, 18668; served as Governor General of India 1S6J 72 : and was a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Kildare. Sat as M.P. for Kildare co. 1847 5-J, for Coleraine, 1852 7, and for Cocker- mouth (C.) 185768 Married, 1848. Blanche Julia, daughter of the 1st Baron Leconfield, and d. Feb. 8, leaving issue four sons and two daughters. His lordship was most brutally murdered at Port Blair, a convict settlement in the Andaman Islands, which he was visit- ing officially, by a convict named Shere Ali, who stabbed him in the back. The report of his melancholy death was received with universal regret both at home and India, and all political parties paid the highest encomiums upon his administrative talents in the East, where he was one of the most popular Governor- Generals that ever ruled there. MAYO, Countess of, BLANCHE JULIA, daughter of the 1st Baron Lecon- field; m. 1848, the 6th Earl of Mayo, who was brutally murdered in the Andaman Islands, Feb. 8th, 1872. Appointed an Extra Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen 1874. Residence, 13, Upper Brook-street, W. McLeod, Baroness, title borne by the Countess of Cromartie.
