Born Oct. 4tb, 1827 ; succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Ripon, (Jan.) 1859, and his uncle as 2nd Earl de Grey, (Nov.) 1859. Acted as Attache to the late Sir Henry Ellis's Special Mission to Brussels, 1849 Sat as M.P. for Hull, 18523, for Hudders- field, 18537, and for the West Riding, 18579. Was Under Secretary of State for War, 185961, and 18613 ; Under Secretary for India (Jan. to July), 1861; Secretary of State for War, 1863 6 ; Secretary of State for India and Pre- sident of the Council of India, 1866, and President of the Council 186873 ; Deputy Grand Master of the Freemasons of England, 186970, and Grand Master 187074. Was Chief of the Joint High Commission to the United States for arranging the Treaty of Washington, 1871. Is Lord Lieut, and Gustos Rotulorum of the North Riding of Yorkshire, a Dep. Lieut, and a Magistrate for the West Riding of Yorkshire, and for Lincolnshire, and Hon. Col. of the 1st Battalion of the West Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers, Was installed Lord High Steward of Hull, 1863, and is President of the Ripon Chamber of Agriculture; made an Hon. D.C..L. of Oxford, 1870. Married (1851) Henrietta Anne Theodosia, eldest daughter of the late Henry Vyner, Esq., and has issue, living, Son, Frederick Oliver, Earl de Grey, M.P., b. 1852 ; educated at Eton, appointed Capt. West Riding of Yorkshire Volunteers. 1870. Has sat as M.P. for Ripon (L.) since Feb. 1874.
