THOMAS JOHN HOVELL-THURLOW-CUM- ING-BRUCE, 5th Baron. Born Dec. 5th, 1838; succeeded his brother 1874. En- tered the Diplomatic Service 1858; ap- pointed Attache at Paris 1859, and 2nd Attache to the Earl of Elgin's Special Mission to China 18601. Was at the capture of Taku forts, and throughout the military operations up to the taking of Pekin; received the thanks of Govern- _ ment and the China medal. Returned to Fidelity is the sister of Justice. the Embassy at Paris, 1861 ; was Private Secretary to the Earl of Elgin when Viceroy of India 1862 3 ; appointed Attache at Turin 1864, in which year he was temporarily attached to Vienna, and also appointed a third Secretary in the Diplomatic Service ; transferred to Stuttgardt, and also to Washing- ton 1865; was Private Secretary to the late Sir Frederick Bruce 1865 6; appointed second Secretary in Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service, and trans- ferred to the Hague 1866, retired from the service 1870. Is a Magistrate and a Dep. Lieut, for the counties of Stirling, Moray and Suffolk. As- sumed, in 1873, the name of Bruce, in right of his wife, as heiress and representative of James Bruce, of Kinnaird, the celebrated Abyssinian traveller ; and in 1874 assumed, by Royal warrant, the additional surname of Cumming. Married (1864) Lady Elma Bruce, daughter of the 8th Earl of Elgin, K.T., by his first wife, the only child of Major Cumming Bruce, M.P., and has issue, living, Son*, James Frederick, b. 1867. Lieut, and a Magistrate for Suffolk. He d. unmarried 1874.
