WILMOT, SIR HENRY, BARONET (1831–1901)

Son of Sir Henry Wilmot, Bart. : born Feb. 3, 1831 : educated at Rugby : entered the Army, 1849 : in the mutiny in the Rifle Brigade and on the Staff of Sir Hope Grant (q.v.) : at the capture of Lucknow, on March 11, 1858, near the Iron Bridge, under severe fire, rescued a wounded soldier, and gained the V.C. : Brevet-Major : Deputy Judge Advocate : with the Oudh Field Force, 1857 : Judge Advocate-General, 1860–1, in China : M.P., 1869–85 for S. Derbyshire : succeeded his father, 1872 : Captain of English shooting eight at Wimbledon meetings : K.C.B., 1897 : D.L. : J.P. : died April 7, 1901.

WILSON, SIR ALEXANDER (1843–)

Born May 2, 1843 : son of the Very Rev. Dean Wilson, Aberdeen : educated at Glenalmond : in India, 1865–91 : partner in the firm of Jardine, Skinner & Co., Calcutta : President of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and of the Bank of Bengal : Member of the Governor-General's Legislative Council : Sheriff of Calcutta, 1887 : knighted : commanded the Calcutta Light Horse : Chairman of the Mercantile Bank of India, London.

WILSON, ANDREW (1831–1881)

Son of the Rev. Dr. J. Wilson (q.v.) born 1831 : educated at Edinburgh and Tubingen Universities : went to India, and took charge of the Bombay Times : in England, edited a Journal at Berwick, and wrote for Blackwood's Magazine : in 1860–3, edited the China Mail and accompanied the expedition to Tientsin : wrote England's Policy in China : travelled in the S. of China and wrote The Ever Victorious Army, a History of the Chinese Campaigns under Lt-Colonel C. G. Gordon, C.B., R.E., and of the Suppression of the Taiping Rebellion, 1878 : edited, 1873, the Bombay Gazette : and the Star of India : travelled on the borders of Chinese Tibet and in the W. Himalayas, 1874–5, and wrote The Abode of Snow; Observations on a Journey from Chinese Tibet to the Indian Caucasus through the Upper Valleys of the Himalaya : died June 9, 1881.

WILSON, SIR ARCHDALE, OF DELHI, BARONET (1803–1874)

Son of Rev. George Wilson : born Aug. 3, 1803 : educated at the R.M.C., Addiscombe : entered the E. I. Co.'s Bengal Artillery in 1819 : at Bhartpur, Jan. 18, 1826 : commanded the Artillery at Lucknow, 1839 : Superintendent of the gunfoundary at Cossipur, 1841–5 : in the Panjab campaign, 1848–9 : commanded the Artillery at Dumdum, 1854 : was commanding at Meerut in 1857 : was at Ghaziuddinnagar on May 30 : at Badli-ka-sarai, and at Delhi commanded the Artillery : on Barnard's death and Reed's resignation was selected to command at the siege of Delhi from July 17 : after the arrival of the siege train on Sep. 4, he yielded to the judgment of the Chief Engineer, Baird-Smith (q.v.), assaulted Delhi on Sep. 14 : its capture completed by Sep. 20 : Wilson, not a strong character, luckily relied on strong advisers, Baird Smith, Nicholson (q.v.) and others : K.C.B., Nov. 17 : Baronet, Jan. 1858 : commanded the Artillery at Sir Colin Campbell's capture of Lucknow, March, 1858 : left India, 1858 : G.C.B., 1867 : Lt-General, 1868 : died May 9, 1874.

WILSON, SIR ARTHUR (1837–)

Born 1837 : called to the bar at the Inner Temple, 1862 : Puisne Judge of the High Court, Calcutta, 1878 : Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, 1880–3 : Legal Adviser at the India Office, 1892–02 : Privy Councillor : Member of the Judicial Committee from 1902.

WILSON, CHARLES ROBERT (1863–1904)
