This ancient family derives its name from the
lordship of Ponsonby in Cumberland, which its
progenitor acquired at the Conquest. The first
setter in Ireland was Sir John Ponsoiiby, a
col. of horse in the service of Cromwell. The
2nd Vise Duncannon received the earldom of
Bessborough, and his 2nd s. was John Ponsonby,
speaker of the Irish House of Commons. The
4th Earl was a distinguished minister, and d.
