The 12th Earl of Kellie was a It. -col. and served for many years in India ; he was also representative peer for Scotland. The title of Mar was attainted and the family estates confiscated by Act of Parliament in 1715 (see Mar, Earl of). The 6th Lord Erskine, who (would have been the Gth Earl of Mar of the old creation, but) was the first possessor of the title of Mar, conferred by Queen Mary, was elected regent of Scotland in 1571.
