The 3rd Earl, better known as Lord Althorp, was Chancellor of the Exchequer. The 5th Earl was .successively Lord- Lieut, of Ireland, Lord Pres. of the Coimcil, First Lord of the Admiralty, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and received the Garter. The family of Speyer has for long been one of the most respected in the Jewish community at Frankfort-on-Main, Michael Isaac " zum Goldenen Hirsch," who d. in 1092, having been pres. of the community, iu which office he was succeeded in tiun by his two sons, Joseph Michael and Moses Michael, both of whom were also members of the Jewish Court of Justice, his 3rd s., Isaac Michael, being chosen as Jewish re- presentative at the Imperial Court of Vienna. In the next two generations we find members of the family holding the posts of court banker to the Landgrave of Hesse and the Emperor respec- tively, of whom Isaac Michael, court banker to the Emperor, was detained as one of the hostages for the fuie imposed on the City of Frankfort by the French general, Custine, iu 1792. Wilhelm Spej'er, grandson of Isaac Michael, was a cele- brated composer. Frankfort still profits by the beneficence of the family in the Joseph Speyer (foimded 1729), and the Isaac Michael Speyer (1807), and the Moses Emanuel Speyer (1801) institutions for the support of varioiis classes of Jewish poor. In 1853 Philip Speyer, imcle of the jsresent Bt., fomided the New York firm, the London firm being established in 1802, these two firms being amongst the first to introdu.ce American securities into Europe during the War of Secession, subsequently furnishing the money to build the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railways.
