The 8th Earl, a General in the Army, was for several years Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, and received the Baronj^ of the U.K., with special remainder to his bro., the present Peer's grandfather. The 1st Lord Grey of Groby was grandfather of the 1st Earl of Stamford, a military conuriander in the Army of the Parliament ; the former was nephew of Henry, Duke of Suffolk (attainted), who was the father of Lady Jane Grey ; the 4th Earl of Stam- ford m. the heiress of the last Earl of Warrington, which title became extinct in 1758. These honours were, however, re-created in favour of 5th Earl of Stamford in 1790 and again became extinct at the death of 7th Earl in 1883.
