GR^Yl TITLES DORMANT AND TITLES IN ABEYANCE 598 GREY of Rotherfield, Barony (writ 1338). — Possibly' this Barony is in abeyance, the heirs being : the Earl of Abingdon J ; Baroness Beaumont | ; Hon. HARTISMERE, Baron. — Lord Hemiiker undoubtedly sat in the House of Lords on a writ in his father's name in the Barony of Hartismere. The sitting was subseciuently expimged by order of the House of Lords. But the sitting under a wrong writ was equivalent to the sitting without a writ, and a sitting as a Peer in Parliament means the existence of a Hereditary Peerage. Unless there is a writ and a patent Kniiting the Peerage to heirs male, the Peerage is one in fee heritable by the heir general. The expunging of the sitting was ultra vires and of no effect, and unquestionably a new Barony was created. HASTANG, Barony (writ 1311). — Heirs : the heir or co-heirs of (1) Sir Humphrey Stafford, living 1506, and (2) Dame Joan Salisbury, living 1360. HEREFORD, Viscounty. — Under the peculiar terms of the patent of this dignity, now in the enjoyment of the Devereux family, there would seem every reason to hold that Viscount Hereford is a I'eer of Ireland as well as of England. HUME of Berwick, Barony (it is doubtful whether this is an English or Scottish Barony. The patent (1605) with remainder to "his heirs " passed under the Great Seals of both England and Scotland). — If an English title, it is in abeyance between the Earl of Home |, and Lord Howard de Walden I. If a Scottish Peerage, it has devolved upon the Earl of Home. HUNTINGDON, Earldom (July 4, 1479). — Sole heir : The Duke of Beaufort, who is de jure Earl of Huntingdon. KELLS in Ossory, Lord (Ireland). — This title is somewhat of a mystery and difficult to establish as a Parliamentary Peerage. It has devolved (as heir general) upon Viscount Gormanston. KENT, Earldom (1321). — Heirs : Identical with the heirs of the Barony of Holand (1353). KINCLEVEN, Barony (Scot. 1628). — Possibly a Barony which has descended to Lord Willoughby de Broke.
