39. Hē andswarode hym and cwæð, Yfel cnēorys and forliger sēcð tācn; and hyre ne byð nān tācn geseald, būton Ionas tācn þæs wītegan.[1]

40. Witodlīce swā swā Ionas wæs on þæs hwæles innoþe þrȳ dāgas and þrēo niht, swā byþ mannes Sunu on eorþan heortan þrȳ dagas and þrēo niht.

41. Niniuetisce weras ārīsað on dōme mid þysse cnēorysse, and hig genyþeriað hig; for þām þe hig dydon dǣdbōte on Ionas bodunge; and þēs ys māra þonne Ionas.

42. Sūþdǣles cwēn ārīst on dōme mid þysse cnēorysse, and hēo genyþerað hig; for þām ðe hēo cōm fram landes gemǣrum tō gehȳranne Salomones wīsdōm; and þēs is māra þonne Salomon.[2]

43. Sōþlīce þonne sē unclǣna gāst ūt færþ fram men, hē gǣð geond drīge stōwa, sēcende rest, and hē ne gemēt.[3]

44. Þonne cwyþ hē, Ic gecyrre on mīn hūs þanon ic ūt ēode; and cumende hē gemēt hyt ǣmtig, and geclǣnsod mid besmum, and gefrætwod.[4]

45. Ðonne gǣþ hē, and him tō genymþ seofun[5] ōþre gāstas wyrsan þonne hē, and in gangende
