geologist, was born Feb. 9, 1854, in Philadelphia. Pa. In 1880 he was appointed geologist in charge of the survey of the anthracite coal fields; and originated a method for surveying and representing the geology of this great coal-bed, which has received the approbation of mining engineers and geologists both in the United States and in Europe. In 1885 he became geologist in charge of all
the office and field work of the survey. died Dec. 24,- 1889, in Pittsburg, Pa.

Ashburner, William, educator, mining engineeer, was born March 28, 1831, in Stockbridge, Mass. In 1864-80 he was a state commissioner to manage, the Yosemite valley and the Mariposa grove. In 1874 he was appointed professor of mining in the university of California. In 1880 he became a regent of the university. He died March 28, 1888, in San Francisco, Cal. Ashby, Thomas Almond, physician, surgeon, founder, author, was born Nov. 18, 1848, in Warren county, Va. He was educated at the Washington and Lee university of Virginia; and in 1873 graduated with the degree of M.D. from the medical department of the university of Maryland. He held numerous hospital and college appointments in Baltimore, Md. and in 1877-88 was founder, editor and proprietor of the Maryland Medical Journal. In 1882 he was the founder of the Woman's medical college of Baltimore; was professor of obstetrics in that institution until 1897. In 1889-97 he was professor of diseases of women in the Baltimore medical college; and since 1897 has filled the same chair in the university of Maryland. He has been president of the medical and chirurgical faculty of Maryland; honorary member of the medical society of the District of Columbia; and fellow of the American gynecological society. He is the author of Diseases of Women; and other works.
