Ashe, Thomas Samuel, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born aljout 1810 in Orange county, N.C. In 1843 he was elected a member of the state legislature of North Carolina. In 1847-53 he was solicitor of the fifth judicial district of North Carolina; in 1854 was elected to the state senate; in 1861 was elected to the house of representatives of the confederate states; to the senate of the confederate congress in 1864; and was one of the councilors of state in 1866. In 1873-77 he was a representative from North Carolina to the forty-third and forty-fourth congresses. He was a justice of the supreme court of North Carolina in 1878-87. He died Feb. 4, 1887, in Wadesboro, N.C.

Practice of Surgery. He was the editor of Transactions of the International Medical Congress; and the International EncyclopEedia of Surgery, in six volumes. He died in 1900 in Philadelphia, Pa. He organized the Metropolis law school of New York City; and accepted a professorship in its faculty.
