phia loyalists' convention. He was governor of the territory of Montana in 1869-70. He died Sept. 16, 1896, in Alma, Mich. Since 1892 he has been professor of economic history at Harvard university. He is the author of James and Philip van Artevelde; An Introduction to English Economic History and Theory; and other works. Ashman, William N., lawyer, jurist, orator, was born in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1857 he began the practice of law; and during the civil war he served as solicitor for the United States sanitary commission. He subsequently became assistant city solicitor of Philadelphia, Pa.; and since 1878 has been judge of the orphans' court. Ashmead, Henry Graham, lawyer, author, was born June 30, 1838, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was local editor of the Chester Evening News, the Delaware County Republican and other newspapers. He is the author of History of Delaware county. Pa.; History of Pennsylvania; and Historical Sketches of
Chester-on-Delaware.
He took postgraduate courses in Boston, Berlin and Oxford; and received the degrees of A.M., Ph.D. and D.D. In 1895-98 he was president of the Genessee Wesleyan seminary then in 1 8 9 9 1902 was president of iversity.

Ashley, Ossian Doolittle, soldier, railroad president, was born April 9, 1831, in Townshend, Vt. He served in the civil war; and attained the rank of colonel. In 1899 he was elected president of the Toledo, Wabash and western railroad company. For a number of years he was connected with the Boston Journal as its financial editor. He died in
1904 in New York 0ty. Ashley, Eoscoe Lewis, educator, author, was born June 33, 1872", in Rochester, N.Y. In 1894 he graduated from the university of Rochester; and subsequently was a scholar in economics at Columbia university. Since 1898 he has been a teacher of American history and government at the high school of Pasadena.* Cal. He is the author of The American Federal State American Government and Government and the Citizen. Ashley, Wiliam H., congressman, lieutenant-governor, was bom in 1778 in Powhatan county, Va. Ashmead, Isaac, printer, founder, was born, Dec. 32, 1790, in Germantown, Pa. He was apprenticed to William Bradford; and in 1821 founded what is now tfie oldest printing establishment in Philadelphia, Pa. He set up the first power-presses ever used in that city; and introduced composition rollers. He was one of the founders of the American Sunday school union, and printed its publications; and he also aided in establishing the American Presbyterian and the Presbyterian Quarterly. He died March 1, 1870, in Philadelphia, Pa. Ashmead, Lehman P., naval officer, manufacturer, was born in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1841 he was appointed midshipman in the' navy; and subsequently settled in New Bedford, Mass. For fifteen years he was engaged in the whaling business and was a member of the city council. In 1863 he took part in organizing a regiment; and after the civil war organized the Richmond granite company. In 1888 he took part in establishing a refuge station for shipwrecked whalemen at Port Barrow, Arctic ocean.
Ashmead, WiUiam Harris, entomologist, author, was bom Sept. 19, 1855, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1897 he has been assistant curator in the United States national museum at Washington, D.C. He is the author of Orange Insects; and other works. Ashmore, John D., soldier, congressman, was bom Aug. 7, 1819, in Greenville, S.C. When quite young he filled various offices in the state militia; was a member of the
South Carolina state legislature in 1848, 1850 and 1853; and in 1853-57 was comptroller-general of the state. In 1859-61 he
