In 1864 he obtained letters patent for a new desilverizing process for argentiferous lead, which was afterward known as the Balbach process. He also invented the water jacket used for smelting and refining furnaces. In 1891 he was appointed president of the Balbach smelting and refining company. He served in the Mexican war; and in 1850 was commissioned lieutenant. In 1861 ^le enlisted in the United States navy to serve in the civil war; and attained the rank of rear-admiral. In 1879-81 he was superintendent of the naval academy at Annapolis, Md; and was retired in 1886. He died in 1908 in Baltimore, Md.

Baldwin, Abel Seymour, physician, state senator, railroad president, was born March 19, 1811, in Fulton, N.Y. He was the first president of the Florida, atlantic and gulf railroad. In 1852 he was elected to the Florida state legislature; in 1859 he was a stats senator; and in 1863 was made medical director of Florida and Georgia. He died about 1905 in Jacksonville, Fla.
