He has been president of the board of trade; a member of the city council; and has held various other positions of trust and honor. Barker, George Frederic, educator, author, was born -July 14, 1835, in Charlestown, Mass. He has been professor of physics in the university of Pennsylvania since 1873. For several years he has edited the annual record of progress in physics published in the Smithsonian reports. In 1878 he was president of the American association for the advancement of science.
