He is professor and head of the department of anatomy at the university of Chicago. He is the author of The Nervous System and Its Constituent Neurones. Barker, Reuben H. Barker, Lorenzo Abel, soldier, journalist, was born Aug. 16, 1839, in Naples, N.Y. In 1861 he enlisted in company E, thirteenth regiment Missouri volunteers; which afterward was changed to company D, sixty sixth Illinois Western Sharpshooters. He fought gallantly during the civil war; and publisher,

He served as postmaster of Reed City during President Harrison's administration; and is editor and owner of the Reed City Clarion. Barker, Samuel Alphonso, educator, lawyer, was born July 26, 1833, in Kennebec, Maine. For ten years he practiced law in his native state; and in 1867 moved to California, where he is known as one of the foremost lawyers of San Jose. He died about 1905. Barker, Theodore Gaillard, soldier, statesman, was born Aug. 24, 1832, in Charleston, S.C. He served throughout the civil war; and attained the rank of major in General Hampton's cavalry division. In 1866 he was a member of the South Carolina state legislature; and in 1888 he was a delegate to the national democratic convention. In 1863 he joined the university infantry; took command of a company of colored soldiers; and helped to enlist and organize the third regiment United States colored troops. He was one of the four who organized in Pennsylvania the republican revolution of 1881. He was the founder of the Investment company of Philadelphia and also of the Finance company of Philadelphia. Barker, William Morris, clergyman, bishop, was born May 12, 1854, in Towanda, Pa. In 1889-93 he was in charge of St. Paul's church at Duluth, Minn.; and was president of St. Luke's hospital of Baltimore in 188789. In 1894-1901 he was protestant episcopal bishop of western Colorado. He died in 1901 in Tacoma, Wash. Barkley, Henry L., educator, legislator, clergyman, bishop, was born March 19, 1858, in Adams county, Ind. He received a thorough education in the public schools of Ohio; and graduated from the high school of Bryan. He has been a successful educator and clergyman; and is now bishop of the Pacific coast district of the United Brethren church at Woodburn, Ore. He served for two terms as a, representative in the Oregon legislature; and has held numerous other positions of trust and honor. Barkley, James Henry, soldier, was born in Kentucky. He enlisted as private in the one hundred and fourteenth regiment Illinois infantry in 1862; and worked his way to brigadier-commander. He is senior brigadiergeneral in the service; and was for a time captain of battery B. He was colonel of the fifth regiment in 1877-91. Barksdale, Ethelbert, journalist, congressman, was born in Rutherford county, Tenn. He was a representative in the confederate congress from Mississippi for four years; in 1876 was a presidential elector and president of the Mississippi college of electors in 1876. In 1883-87 he was a representative from Mississippi to the forty-eighth and fortyninth congresses. He died Feb. 17, 1893, in Yazoo, Miss.
