He edited the Genessee Farmer in 1844-52; and was editor of the Horticulturist in 1852-54. He wrote extensively on subjects connected with pomology and flowers; and in 1851 produced a Treatise on the Fruit Garden. His most important book is the complete and valuable Catalogue of the American Pomological Society. He died June 23, 1890, in Rochester, N.Y Bariy, Sichard, journalist, author, was

born Sept. 10, 1881, in Eau Claire, Wis. He was correspondent in the Russo-Japanese war. He is the author of Port Arthur; Sandy from the Sierras, and The Events Man. Barry, Thomas Henry, soldier, was born Oct. 13, 1855, in New York City. He attained the rank of brigadier-general in the Unit-

ed States volunteers during the SpanishAmerican war. Barry, William, clergyman, author, was bom Jan. 10, 1805, in Boston, Mass. He was a congregational clergyman of Chicago, 111. He was the author of Rights and Duties of Neighboring Churches; Thoughts on Christian Doctrine; History of Framingham; and Anti quities of Wisconsin. He died Jan. 17, 1885, in Chicago,

the Charleston convention in 1860 ; was president of the secession convention of Mississippi; and was a member of the Provisional congress. He entered the confederate army in 1861; and commanded the thirty-fifth Mississippi regiment from 1862 until captured at Mobile in 1865. He died Jan. 29, 1868, in Columbus, Miss. Barrjrmore, Ethel, actress, was born Aug. 15, 1879, in Philadelphia, Pa., and is the daughter of the late Maurice Drew. She has pjayed in leading roles with Henry Irving; and is engaged principally with the Empire theater of New York City. Barrymore, Maurice, actor, author, was bom in 1847 in India. For many years he took leading part with Modjeska. He is the author of Nadjeska; The Robber of the Rhine; and other plays. He died March 35, 1905, in Amityville, N.Y. Barrymore, William, actor. He came to the United States in 1826; and was state manager of the Bowery theater. His first appearance here as an actor was in 1832 at the Walnut street theater of Philadelphia, in the pantomine of Mother Goose. He died in 1847, in Boston, Mass. Barse, George R., painter, artist, was bom in 1861 in Detriot, Mich. In 1896 he painted eight panels for the government in the library of congress. He is a figure painter; and the character of his work tends to the decorative.

Amos Chafee, manufacturer, legphilanthropist. He was mayor of Providence in 1852; and as mayor he delivered a memorial address on Daniel Webster in Market hall. The Pennsylvania house of representatives elected him speaker in 1870. He died in Providence, R.I. Barstow, Gamaliel H., business man, congressman, was born in 1785 in New York. He was treasurer of the state of New York in 1825-38; served three years in the state assembly of New York; and four years in the state senate. In 1831-33 he was a representative from New York to the twentysecond congress. He died in April, 1865, in Barstow,

Aug. 8, 1818, in New York City. In 1865 he was made brevet brigadier-general in the United States army for his services in the campaign ending with the surrender of the army under General Johnson; and on the same day was made brevet major-general for gallant conduct in the field. He was the author in conjunction with General Barnard, of Reports of the Engineer and Artillery Operations of the Army of the Potomac from its Organization to the Close of the Peninsular Campaign. He died July 18, 1879, in Baltimore,

Barry, William Taylor, lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Feb. 5, 1785, in Lunenburg, Va. He practiced law in Lexington, Ky., where his eloquence soon brought him into prominence and served in the state legislature as speaker. In 1810-11 he was a representative to the eleventh congress; and in 1814-17 was a member of the United States Senate. In 1829-35 he was postmastergeneral. Previous to this time the postmaster-general was not considered a member of the cabinet. He died Aug. 20, in Liverpool, England.
