pastorates in Hillsboro and Alton, 111.; and in 1881-96 filled a pastorate in St. Louis, Mo. In 1880-90 he was a trustee of Illinois college; and in 1881-96 was trustee of Drury college.

Adams, George Everett, lawyer, state senator congressman, was born June 18, 1840, in Keene, N.H. Since 1865 he has been a lawyer of Chicago, 111.; and in 1880 he was elected a state senator for a term of five years. In 1883-91 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-eighth, forty-ninth, fiftieth filled and fifty-first congresses.

Adams, George F., clergyman, educator, founder, author, was born Oct. 3, 1802, in Dorchester, Mass. For fifty years he was a minister of the baptist church; and in 1842 became general missionary for the state of Maryland. For a short time he was a chaplain in the confederate army. In 1836 he was one of the four founders of the Maryland baptist union association. He was the author of History of the Maryland Baptist Churches. more, Md.

lege; studied law; was clerk of the circuit court of Knox county from 1859 to 1861; subsequently served for a Tew months as a captain in the union army; and was an additional paymaster of volimteers in 1861-65.

In 1867-75 he was a representative from Kentucky to the fortieth, forty-first, fortysecond and forty-third congresses.

Adams, George Moulton, clergyman, author, was bom July 7, 1824, in Castine, Maine. In 1844 he graduated from Bowdoin college;

and in 1850-1906 filled pastorates in the congregational church. He was the author of The Biblical Encyclopedia, in five volumes. He died Jan. 11, 1906, in Auburndale, Mass. Adams, Green, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Aug. 20, 1812, in Barboursville, Ky. In 1839 he was elected to the state legislature. In 1847-49 and 1859-61 he was a representative from Kentucky to the thirtieth and thirty-sixth congresses; was a presidential elector in 1844 and 1856; and a judge of the circuit court of Kentucky in 1851-56. In 1861 he was appointed sixth auditor of the United States treasury; and was disbursing clerk in the house of representatives at Washington in 1875-81. He died Jan. 18, 1884.

Adams, Henry, pioneer, projenitor, was born in England. He was one of the first settlers in that part of Massachusetts designated as Mt. Wollaston, which in 1640 was incorporated as the town of Braintree, Mass. He arrived in 1632 with his wife, eight sons and a daughter. He was the noted projenitor of the Adams family of Quincy. His sons were Henry, Thomas, Samuel, Jonathan, Peter, John, Joseph and Edward, all of whom

He was commissioned a lieutenant in 1856; and was on the Brooklyn at the passage of forts St. Philip and Jackson, and the capture of New Orleans in 1862. He volunteered for anything and everything. After the taking of Richmond lie was one of the party that accompanied President Lincoln on his entry into the city. He was commissioned a commander in 1866.

Adams, Henry Carter, political economist, author, was born in 1851 in Davenport, Iowa. He is a political economist of note. He is the author of Public Debts, an Essay in the Science of Finance; Taxation in the United States, 1789-1816; and Outline of Lectures on Political Economy.
