Adams, Henry CuUen, dairyman, legislator, congressman, was born Nov. 38, 1850, in Verona, N.Y. In 1851 he moved with his parents to Wisconsin. In 1883-87 he was a representative in the Wisconsin state legislature; in 1884-90 was state superintendent of public property; and in 1894-1903 was dairy and food commissioner of Wisconsin. In 1903-05 he was a representative from Wisconsin to the fifty-eigiith congress as a republican. He died July 9, 1906, in Chicago, 111. Adams, Henry Joseph, educator, lawyer, statesman, was born Feb. 10, 1816, in Rodman, N.Y. In 1840-55 he was connected with the city schools of Cincinnati, chiefly as a principal. In 1856 he was elected a member of the Kansas state senate; and in 1857-58 was mayor of Leavenworth, Kan. During the greater portion of the civil war he was paymaster at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He died in Leavenworth, Kan. Adams, Herbert, sculptor, artist, was born in 1858 in West Concord, Vt. He is a member of the national academy of design ; and a noted sculptor of New York City.
Adams, Herbert Baxter, educator, author, was born April 16, 1850, in Shutesbury, Mass. In 1876-1905 he was a professor of history at Johns Hopkins university; and secretary of the American historical association from its beginning in 1884. He was the author of The Germanic Origin of New England Towns; Saxon Tithingmen in America; Norman Constables in America; Village Communities of Cape Ann and Salem; Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia; Methods of Historical Study; and History of the United States Constitution. He edited the Life and Writings of Jared Sparks; and a volume of Genealogy of the Thomas Adams and Thomas Hastings Families. He died in
1905 in Baltimore, Md.

cation in the Michigan house of representatives. He assisted in preparing the bill to establish the university of Michigan, and took an active interest in that institution during his life. He died in 1853 in Troy, Mich. Adams, Isaac, state senator, inventor, was born in 1803 in Rochester, N.H. In 1838 he Invented the printing press that bears his name. It was introduced in 1830, and came into almost universal use, being still so popular as to warrant its manufacture in more than thirty different sizes. He improved it in 1834, making it substantially what it now is. He was a member of the Massachusetts itate senate in 1840. He died July 19, 1883, in
Sandwich, N.H.

Adams, James Dexter, naval officer, was born about 1840 in New York. In 1868 he graduated from the naval academy; and in 1873 was promoted to lieutenant. In 1894 he was commissioned lieutenant commander and in 1899 was promoted to commander. Adams, James Edward, educator, clergyman, missionary, was born May 3, 1867, in Decatur county, Ind. In 1888 he graduated and received the degree of B.S. from Washington college of Topeka, Kan. He took a post-graduate course in mathematics and physics at Johns Hopkins university; and subsequently graduated from the McCormick presbyterian theological seminary of Chicago, 111. He has been a successful instructor in mathematics; in 1894-95 he was traveling secretary for the American inter-seminary missionary alliance; and since 1895 has been
missionary of the presbyterian church in Korea.

geon, physician, author, was born March 30, 1844, in Boston, Mass. He graduated from the high school of Dedham, Mass. attended Lawrence scientific school and in 1866 graduated from Harvard medical school. In 186263 he was a medical cadet in the United States army; in 1864-65 was acting assistant-surgeon in the United States navy; and served in Washington and in the east gulf blockading squadron. Since 1867 he has been in the active practice of his profession in Pittsfield, Mass. He is the author of Cremation and Burial; Sanitary Forest Culture; The Prevention of Diseases in Massachus;

and various other medical works.
Adams, James Hopkins, state senator, governor, was born about 1811 in South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina legislature and state senate; and was governor of that state in 1854-56. After the secession of South Carolina from the union he was one of the commissioners appointed to confer with the president concerning United States property in South Carolina. He died July 37, 1861, near Columbus, S.C.
