educated at old St. Mary's of the Lake in Chicago, 111.; at Notre Dame of Indiana; and studied for nine years at the American college

where he was ordained a priest in 1875. For three years he was assistant pastor of St. ilary's in Chicago, 111., and for nine years was pastor of St. Mary's in Joliet, 111. In 188793 he was the Roman catholic bishop of Cheyenne, Wyo. ; and since 1893 has been bishop of St. Joseph, Mo. He is also noted as an eminent linguist. Burke, Mile Darwin, civil engineer, author, was born Aug. 23, 1841 in Ashland county, Ohio. He has a general practice in engineer-

ing work at Kennedy, Ohio and constructed four incline planes for passenger traffic. He is the author of Brick for Street Pavements.

Burke, Robert Emmet, soldier, lawyer, jurcongressman, was born Aug. 1, 1847, in Tallapoosa county, Ala. He volunteered as a private soldier in company D, tenth Georgia cavalry, at the age of sixteen; and served until the close of the civil war. He removed to Texas in 1866; was county judge in 1878-84; and was district judge in 1888. In 1897-1901 he was a representative from Texas to the fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth congresses as a democrat. 1863-69 he was judge of common pleas. He was president of the Toledo and Ohio central railroad; the Kanawha and Michigan railway. The Republic coal company; the Cana<iian copper company; and the Anglo- American iron company. He died in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio. Buike, Thomas, physician, lawyer, governor, author, was born in 1747 in Ireland. In 1776 he was a member of the provincial congress at Halifax and was a volunteer at the battle of Brandywine. In 1774-81 he was a delegate to the.continental congress. In 178182 he was governor of North Carolina ; while in that position was seized by the tories as a prisoner of state; and was sent to James' island on parole, where he was detained as a liostage. An exchange was effected by General Greene; and he returned to his position •as governor. He died Dec. 3, 1783, in Hillsborough, N.C. Burke, Thomas, lawyer, jurist, was born Dec. 22, 1849, in Clinton county, N.Y. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools of his native county; in

1870 he graduated from Ypsilanti seminary of Michigan; studied one year in the university of Michigan, and received the degree of LL.D. In 1873 he began the practice of law; for four years was judge of probate court of King county. Wash.; and in 1888-89 was chief justice of the supreme court of Washington territory. He has a large practice in Washington at Seattle; and has been a member of the Washington territorial board of education.

Burke, Thomas Martin Aloysius, clergyman, bishop, was born Jan. 10, 1840, in Ireland. He was theologian in the third plenary council in 1884; became vicar-general and administrator; and in 1894 was consecrated Roman catholic bishop of Albany.

Burket, Jacob

lawyer, banker, jurist, Perry county, Ohio. Since 1887 he has been president of the American national bank of Findlay, Ohio. In 1893-1906 he was judge of the state supreme court of Ohio. He died in 1906 in Findlay, Ohio. Burkett, Charles William, educator, lecturer, author, was born Jan. 3, 1873 in Thornville, Ohio. In 1895 he graduated with the degree of B.Sc. from the university of Ohio; and subsequently received the degrees of M. Sc. and Ph.D. In 1895-98 he was assistant in agriculture at the Ohio state university; in 1898-1901 was professor of agriculture and agriculturist at 'the experiment station of New Hampshire college; and in 1901-06 filled the same chair at the experiment station of North Carolina agricultural college.
