Since 1893 he has been judge of the state supreme court of Ohio and is now chief justice of the state supreme court of Ohio for the term of 1900-10. Burkett, John William Newton, editor, banker, journalist, publisher, was born Jan. 26, 1854, in Woodruff county. Ark. In 1891 he organized and became president of the Jackson banking company of Jackson, Miss. In 1895 he began his journalistic career; and since 1898 has been editor and publisher of the Jackson Dispatch. In 1896 he was a delegate to the democratic national convention. He has served as treasurer of the city of Jackson; and for several years was president of the board of trade. Burkhardt, Richard Peter, manufacturer, inventor, was born Oct. 28, 1845, in Germany. Since 1891 he has been president of the
Stomps-Burkhardt company of Dayton, Ohio. He has invented a number of valuable machines used in the manufacture of chairs. Burkhardt, Samuel, soldier, was born in Illinois. In 1885 he entered the United States military academy at West Point as a cadet from Illinois; in 1889 graduated from that institution; and was made a second lieutenant in the twenty-fifth regiment of United States infantry; in 1897-99 he served through the Spanish-American war as a first lieutenant in the tenth regiment United States infantry. Since 1899 he has been captain in the nineteenth regiment United States infantry. Burkhart, Harvey Jacob, dentist, mayor, was born Aug. 14, 1864, in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1890 he began the practice of dentistry in Batavia, N.Y. In 1902-06 he was mayor of that city. He was chairman of the committee to organize the fourth international dental congress in St. Louis, Mo. Burkhart, Joseph Elijah, soldier, farmer, clergyman, jurist, was born Jan. 3, 1838, in Butler, Pa. He was educated in the public and high schools of his native state.
