was born Nov. 5. 1859, in Syracuse, N.Y. In 1893-95 she was compiler of the catalogues of public documents of the United States. Since 1898 she has been librarian of the university of Vermont.

He was the author of Sex in Education; The Building of a Brain; Visions: a Study of False Sight; and Nature and Treatment of Polypus of the Ear. He died Nov. 30, 1877, in Boston, Mass. Clarke, Elijah, soldier, was born in North Carolina. He became a captain in 1776; and distinguished himself in engagements both with Indians and British on the frontiers of Georgia. Clarke, Eliot Channing, civil engineer, author, was born May 6, 1845, in Boston, Mass. He has practiced civil engineering in different parts of the United States in connection with building railroads, bridges, tunnels,
waterworks and sewerage systems. He is the author of Main Drainage Works of the City of Boston.
Frank Gay, lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born Sept. 10, 1850, in Wilton, N.H. He was a member of the state Clarke,
house of representatives in 1885; of the state senate in 1889; re-elected to the former in 1891, and was chosen speaker of that body. He was appointed colonel on the military staff of Governor Hale, and served in that capacity in 1885-87. In 1897-1901 he was a representative to the fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth congresses as a republican. He died Jan. 8, 1901, in Peterboro, N.H. Clarke, Frank H., physician, neurologist, was born Dec. 27, 1853, in New Orleans, La.
He
attended the medical college of EvansInd. studied in the medical department of the university of Louisville and attended the New York polyclinic. He has attained success as a noted physician of Lexington, Ky. was medical superintendent of the eastern Kentucky asylum for insane in 1886-96; was physician to the good Samaritan hospital; and consulting neurologist to the eastern Kentucky asylum for the insane. ville,

Boston twentieth century club and an honorary member of the Boston Browning society. She was one of the founders and secretary of the American musical society. In 1889 she was, one of the founders of the Poet-Lore of Boston, of which she has since been editor. She has delivered lectures on mythology in Philadelphia; and has frequently given addresses on various topics in Philadelphia and Boston. She is part editor of Robert Browning Poems and other works; she is part author of Browning Study Programmes Shakespeare's Studies; and Browning's Italy; Browning's England;; A Child's Guide to Mythology; Longfellow's Country; and Myth and Fancy in the English Poets. She is also a composer of piano music and songs; and a. writer of essays and reviews on poetry. Clarke, Henry Francis, soldier, was born Nov. 9, 1820, in Brownsville, Pa. He ordered the expedition for the relief of Port Pickens in 1861; served in the Massachusetts campaign, and was present at the siege of Yorktown, and in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was brevetted brigadier-general for gallantry at the battle of Gettysburg; and major-general for faithful services in the subsistence department during the civil war. He died May 10, 1887, in Washington, D.C.
