university of North Carolina. He studied law and commenced practice at Washington, N.C. In 1833 and 1834 he was a member of the state house of commons. In 1845-47 he was a representative from North Carolina to the twenty-ninth congress as a democrat. He died in North Carolina. Clarke, Isaac A., soldier, educator, founder, was born March 22, 1837, in Overton county, Tenn. During the civil war he served as a quartermaster, with the rank of captain, in the confederate army. 39 he conducted the Territorial, now State Gazette of Burlington, Iowa. He was appointed secretary of the territory; and in 1843-45 resumed publication of the Gazette. He was governor of the territory in 1846; and again edited the Gazette from 1848 until his death. He died July 28, 1850, in Burlington, Iowa. Clarke, James Cavin, railroad president, was born in 1834 in Montgomery county, Md. He entered railroad service in 1844; was ten years with the Baltimore and Ohio; and with other roads until 1863. In 1862-70 he was engaged in the iron business. In 187073 he was president of Chesapeake and Ohio canal company. In 1874-87 he was connected
with the Illinois central railroad, four years as president; and in 1894-98 was president of the Mobile and Ohio railroad. He died in 1902 in Mobile, Ala. Clarke, James Freeman, clergyman, author, was bom April 4, 1810, in Hanover, N.H. He founded the church of the disciples of Boston and was its pastor from 1841 till his death. James P., lawyer, senator, was born Aug. 18, 1854, in Yazoo City, Miss. He began the practice of law in 1879 in Helena, Ark. In 1886-88 he was a member of the Arkansas state legislature; and in 1888-92 was a member of the state senate. In 189394 he was attorney general of Arkansas; and in 1895-97 was governor of Arkansas.

In 1893 he was elected to the United States senate; and is now serving his second term ending in 1915. Clarke, Jeremiah, pioneer, colonial governor, was born in the seventeenth century in England. In 1639 he was one of the original settlers of
Newport,
R.I.;
and became

urer of the province in 1647. In 1648-49 he was president regent of Rhode Island. He died about 1650 in Rhode Island. Clarke, John, governor. He was the tenth governor of Delaware in 1817-20. Clarke, John, soldier, governor, was bom in 1766 in North Carolina. He fought under his father, General Elijah Clarke, in the revolutionary army. At the siege of Augusta and at the battle of Jack's Creek, in 1787, he greatly distinguished himself; and attained the rank of major-general of the state militia. He was the thirteenth governor of Georgia in 1819-33. He died Oct. 15, 1832, in West Florida. Clarke, John B., lawyer, congressman, was born April 14, 1833, near Augusta, Ky. He was county attorney in 1858-62, and was state senator of Kentucky in 1867-71. In 1875-79 he was a representative from Kentucky to the forty-fourth and forty-fifth congresses as a democrat. Clarke, John C, congressman, was bom March 8, 1793, in Connecticut. He served in the assembly of New York in 1826; and in 1837-39 and 1837-41 he was a representative from New York to the twentieth, twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses. Clarke, John Mason, geologist, author, was born April 15, 1857, in Canandaigua, N.Y. In 1881-84 he was professor of geology and mineralogy at Smith college of Northampton, Mass.; after which he filled a similar chair in the Massachusetts agricultural college at Amherst; and in 1886 became assistant geologist and paleontolo^st of the state of New York. In 1898 he was New York state paleontologist. He is the author of Life of Lieutenant William Clarke; and numerous books and papers pertaining to geology and paleontology. Clarke, John Proctor, lawyer, jurist, was born in Florence, Italy. Since 1900 he has been an associate justice of the state supreme court of New York.
