He died suddenly while attending the president's reception, Jan. 1, 1883, in Washington, D.C. Allen, Mrs. Elizabeth Akers, author, poet, was born Oct. 9, 1832, in Strong, Maine. In 1855 she became assistant editor of the Portland Transcript; and wrote the celebrated poem entitled Rock Me to Sleep, Mother. She is the author of a volume of poetry entitled Forest Buds from the Woods of Maine; and a second volume of verse entitled Poems by Florence Percy. She is also the author of The Silver Bridge; The Triangular Society; The High Top Sweeting; The Proud Lady of Stavoren; and other works. Allen, Ethan, an officer of the revolutionary war, was Ijorn Jan. 10, 1737, in Litchfield, Conn. He was leader of the famous Green mountain boys of Vermont; and the hero of the capture of forts Ticonderoga and Crown Point on May 10, 1775. He attacked the English at Montreal, was taken prisoner, and sent to England in irons. In 1778 he received the brevet rank of colonel in the continental army in reward of his fortitude, firmness and zeal in the cause of his country, manifested during his long and cruel captivity, as well as on former occasions. He was the author of Narrative of the Capture of Ticonderoga; Reason the Only Oracle of Man; and A Vindication of the Inhabitants of Vermont. He died Feb. 13, 1789, near Burlington, Vt. Allen, Ethan, lawyer, author, was born May 13, 1833, in Manasquau, N.J. He is a noted lawyer of New York City; and in 189698 was president of the Cuban league of the United States. He is the author of Drama of the Revolution, Allen, Eugene Thomas, educator, chemist, geologist, scientist, was born April 3, 1864, in Athol, Mass. In 1887 he graduated from Amherst colege; in 1893 graduated with the degree of Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins university; and in 1893-95 was a student at Harvard university. In 1893-93 he was acting professor of chemistry in the university of Colorado; and in 1895-1901 was professor of chemistry in the school of mines of the university of Missouri. Since 1903 he has been engaged in the study of rock magmos in the Carnegie geophysical laboratory at Washington, D.C. He has published Researches, chiefly in organic and mineral chemistry. Allen, F. Sturges, lawyer, lexicographer, was bom Oct. 1, 1861, in Norwalk, Conn. In 1884-90 he was an editor on Webster's International Dictionary. In 1893-1903 he practiced law in New York City. In 1893-98 he edited or abridged the various smaller Webster's dictionaries; and was chief editor of the
supplement of Webster's International Dictionary, published in 1900. Allen, Francis Olcott, historian, author, was born March 14, 1840, in Hartford, Conn. In 1866 he moved to Philadelphia, Pa.; and
was manager and president of a insurance business. He then retired and entered the work on historical lines of various kinds. He is the author of History of Enfield; and other works.
