He is a lecturer on patent law in the George Washington university; and in 1904 represented the United States at the congress of the international association for the protection of industrial property held at Berlin and at Berne, Switzerland. Allen, Frederick S., sailor, inventor, was born Dec. 25, 1835, in Dartmouth, Mass. He has been a whaleman and captain of humane crews. His inventions have been numerous, the most notable of which is a life car. Allen, Gardner Weld, physician, author, was born Jan. 19, 1856, in Bangor, Maine. Since 1884 he has practiced medicine in Boston, Mass. He is the author of Our Navy and the Barbary Corsairs. Allen, George, educator, author, was born Dec. 17, 1808, in Milton, Vt. In 1837 he taught ancient languages in Delaware college of Newark; and in 1845 was professor of ancient languages, and then of Greeli alone, in the university of Pennsylvania. He was the author of Life of Philidor, the chess-player. He died May 28, 1876, in Worcester, Mass. Allen, George A., lawyer, statesman, was born Dec. 21, 1839, near Pulaslii, Pa. In 1868 he began the practice of law in Erie, Pa.; and was city solicitor. In 1872 and 1877 he was a delegate to the Pennsylvania state conventions; and in 1880 was a delegate to the demoertic national convention. In 1886 he was appointed United States district attorney; and in 1892 was a democratic nominee for congressman-at -large. Allen, George L., manufacturer, millionaire, was born in St. Louis, Mo. He is president of a large iron worlcs corporation of St. He is also vice-president of Louis, Mo. George Knapp and company, publishers of

that city. Allen, Geprge Murdock, journalist, publisher, was born Aug. 26, 1853, in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1878-82 he was paymaster in the

United States navy. Since 1883 he has published the Express of Terre Haute, Ind. Allen, Gerard B., real estate, millionaire, of St. Louis, Mo. His father, the late Gerard B. Allen, was a successful real estate dealer of St. Louis, Mo.; and left an estate worth several million dollars. Allen, Glover Morrill, naturalist, author, was born Feb. 8, 1879, in Walpole, N.H. an Naturalist of Boston, Mass. He is the author of The Birds of Masachusetts. Allen, Grace Barton, educator, artist, was born in Richmond, Va. She is a water-color artist; and a teacher in the New York school of applied design for women. Many of her pictures have been lithographed. Allen, Harrison, soldier, was born about 1815 in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he was major in the tenth regiment Pennsylvania reserves ; in 1863 became captain in the one hund-

fantry; and was made a colonel the same year. In 1865 he was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers for faithful and meritorious services. He died in 1904. Allen, Harrison, surgeon, author, was born April 17, 1841, in Philadelphia, Pa. During the civil war he was an assistant surgeon; and in 1865 was brevetted captain and major for faithful services. He was professor in the university of Pennsylvania in 1865-97. He was the author of Outlines of Comparative of Human Anatomy. died Nov. 14, 1897, in Philadelphia, Pa. Allen, Heman, soldier, diplomat, statesman, was born Oct. 15, 1740, in Cornwall, Conn. He owned considerable property in Vermont; in 1777 was a delegate from Rutland to the convention that declared for independence; and was also a delegate from Colchester to the Windsor convention that framed the state constitution of Vermont. He was a member of the Vermont state legislaure. He was captain of a company of the Green mountain boys in the expedition to Canada; and at the battle of Bennington he was present as one of the committee of safety. He died in May, 1778, in Vermont. Allen, Heman, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1776. He was a resident, if not a native of Milton, Vt.; and adopted the profession of the law, in which he became distinguished. In 1831-39 he was a representative from Vermont to the twenty-second, twentythird, twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth congresses. He died Dec. 11, 1844, in Burlington, Vt. Allen, Heman, lawyer, displomat, congressman, was born Feb. 23, 1779, in Poultney, Vt. In 1811-14 he was chief justice of the Chittenden county court; in 1812-17 was an active member of the state legislature and was appointed quartermaster of militia, with the title of brigadier-general. He wag first elected a representative in congress from Vermont in 1817, but resigned in 1818 to accept the appointment of United States marshal for the district of Vermont. In 1833-28 he was minister to Chili. In 1830 he was appointed president of the United States branch bank of Burlington, Vt. He died April 9, 1852, in Highgate, Vt. Allen, Henry, founder of a sect, was bom June 14, 1748, in Newport, R.I. In 1774 and" succeeding years he made many converts in Nova Scotia to his peculiar mystical religious ideas. He believed that human souls are emanations from a single great spirit; and that the bible is to be interpreted not literally, but in a spiritual sense. He published a book of hymns and several treatises and sermons. The Allenites became numerous under his eloquent preaching, but declined after his death. He died Feb. 2, 1784, in Northampton,
