FOUNDING OF THE CITY OF CALCUTTA The founding of the city of Calcutta by Mr. Job Charnock, chief of the Bengal council, is assigned to the year 1686, although the site was an old one and the BATHING AT THE KALI GHAT IN CALCUTTA. Portuguese had anchored there as early as 1530 in their trade with Hugli town., The city owes its name Cal- cutta to Kall-gMt, " Ghat of the goddess Kali," a famous Hindu shrine on the banks of the Hugli and now situated on the outskirts of Calcutta.
