A young woman, plainly dressed with her hair neatly braided, sits in profile at a table with a newspaper in her hand. She has apparently ceased reading in order to speak to some one. A young woman, in profile to the right, sits in a red velvet chair. She holds a book in her right hand, resting it on the edge of a table, and is turning a page with her left hand. On the table are an inkpot and a candle. She wears a white silk hood tied round the chin with a black ribbon, a black cape, a purple jacket and a grey skirt. In the background is a dark curtain.
