The author's style is antiquated, and the book contains a great deal of useless erudition ; yet, considering the age in which it was written, it has great merit, and is still referred to as an authority by the English law writers of the present day. Judge Johnson says : " Malynes' book unites the commendations of antiquity, good sense, and practical knowledge;" yet it will not be doubted that the separate treatises, mainly composing the Lex Mercatoria, are nearly obsolete, and that Malynes is but a collec- tion adding little to the original stock of information upon the Law Merchant. 20 N.
