Sir William Scott is said to have been most fastidious in correcting the language of his judgments, which are conveyed in rich and classical diction. They are regarded as models of judicial eloquence and sound learning, and have the highest professional reputation. "It may be said that he has created the law of his own Court. He was capable at once, of taking the most extensive view of his subject, and of discriminating its nicest distinctions. While he brought great learning to the discus- sion of every cause which came before him, he was able to strike out for himself the true principle on which it should be decided, and to leave it a guide and precedent for posterity." 18 L.
