UNI UNITED STATES. A Digest of the Decisions of the Courts of Common Law and Admiralty in the United States. Vol. I. by T. Metcalf and J. C. Perkins. Vols. II. and III. by G. T. Curtis. 3 vols. 8vo. Boston. 1840-46. A fourth volume is now passing through the press, that will bring a Di""est of the Cases down to 1815, All that can reasonably be expected of works of this kind, is, that they contain the general Titles of the law, with appropriate subdivisions, properly arranged, and correct abstracts or references to all the cases embraced in the reports in the period contemplated. It is very well known, that none of the more compre- prehensive Digests are wholly prepared for the press, by those persons whose names appear upon the title pages, who only stand as vouchers for the substantial accuracy of the volumes, and if this is attained, their legitimate object is accomplished, and the profession receives all that the editors assume to perform. In works of such magnitude, occasional mistakes of reference, and indifferent abridgments of cases will inevita- bly occur, from which defects, the United States Digest is not wholly free, but its general plan and correctness, is highly creditable to the persons engaged in its preparation, and have won for it the general ap- probation of the profession. 3 L, R. 35 ; 23 A. It is com- monly known as Story's edition, who suggested its plan, and marked the acts to be published, for the first three volumes, which is the only edito- rial labor which he bestowed upon it. The remaining volumes appeared under the supervision of Mr. Sharswood, upon the same plan as the first. 9 L. R. 282; 21 A, J. 502. .
