In^Cutts's ' Scenes and Characters of the Middle Ages' (London, 1902), on p. 473, is an illustration from a manuscript, in the lower margin of which there is a ship sur- rounded by a flight of gulls ; a whale is in the foreground, with a water-line close to the top of its body. Close by is a rowboat with two persons in it. On the whale two persons are standing, evidently building a fire.
