AY it plcafe your moft Excellent Majefly ; We your Majefty's moft dutiful and loyal Subjefts, _ the Commons oi G7-eat Britain in Parliament aflembled, duly confidering your Majefty's great Oc- casions for Money to defray the Expences of the prefent War, and other neceffary Services, have for that End and Piupofe cheerfully and unanimoufly given and granted, and do by this Aft give and grant to your Majefty, as well the feveral Duties for and upon all Candles made in Greaf Britain, or imported into the fame, as alfo the feveral Duties or Rates upon Monies to be given, or agreed to be given, with fuch Clerks, Apprentices or Servants, as are herein after-mentioned, for and during the refpedtive Terms herein after cxprelfed ; and do moft humbly befeech your Majefty, that it rliay be enacted ; And be it en- acted by the Qiieen's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament aflembled, and by the Authority of the fame, Duty on Candles That there Ihall be raifed, levied, colledled, and paid unto and for the Ufe of her Majefty, her Heirs and '— -^—' Succefibrs, for and upon all Candles which, at any Time or Times within or during the Term of five Years, to be reckoned from the firft Day o'i May one thoufan J feven hundred and ten, ftiall be imported or brought into the Kingdom oi Great Brifai-n (over and above all Cuftoms, Subfidies, and other Duties already impofed thereupon) the feveral and refpeftive Duties herein after-mentioned; that is to fay, For all Candles made of Wax, or ufually called or fold for Wax Candles (notwichftanding the Mixture of any other Ingredients therewith) which fhall be fo imported, the Sum of four Pence, for every Pound Weight Averdupois, and after that Rate for a greater or leller Quantity ; and for all Candles made of Tal- low, and other Candles whatfoever (except the Wax Candles before charged) which fliall bs fo imported, one Halfpenny, for every Pound Weight Averdupois, and after that Rate for a greater or leffer Quantity; the faid feveral Duties for and upon all imported Candles, to be paid down in ready Money by the Im- porters thereof, before the landing of the fame refpedlively ; and there {hall be raifed, levied, collefted, and paid to and for the Ufe of her Majefty, her Heirs and Succefibrs, for and upon all Candles, which at any Time or Times, within or during the faid Term of five Years, fhall be made within the ffiid King- dom oi Great Britain, the feveral and refpecJtive Duties herein after-mentioned; that is to fay. penny, for every Pound Weight Averdupois, and after that Rate for a greater or lefler Quantity; the faid feveral Duties for the faid Candles fo to be made in Great Britain, to be paid by the Makers thereof re- fpecSively. Candles landed H. And be it enadled by the Authority aforefaid. That in Cafe any of the faid imported Candles fhall before Ent^y,&c. jjg landed, or put on Shore out of any Ship or Veffcl, before due Entrey be made thereof at the Cuftom- houfe in the Port or Place where the fame fhall be imported, and before the faid Duties by this Aft charg- ed or chargeable thereupon fhall be duly paid, or without a Warrant for the landing or delivering the fame, firft figned by the Comrniffioners, Colleftors, or other proper Officer or Officers of the Cuftoms re- fpeftively ; that all fuch imported Candles of what Kind foever, as fhall be fo landed and put on Shore, or taken out of any Ship or Vefl'el, contrary to the true Meaning hereof, or the value of the fame, fhall be forfeited, and ftiall and may be feized or recovered of the Importer or Proprietor thereof, to wit, one Moiety of the fame to the Ufe of her Majefty, her Heirs and Succeffbrs, and the other Moiety to the Ufe of fudi Perfon or Perfons, as will feize, inform or fue for the Candles fo imported and forfeited, or the Value thereof, in any of her Majefty's Courts of Record at TVeftminfter, or in her Majefty's Court oi Ex- chequer in Scotland, by Aftioii, Bill, Suit or Information, v/herein no Eflbin, Proteftion, or Wager of Law fhall be allowed. III. And be it further enafted by the Authority aforefaid. That the faid Duties upon imported Candles, by this Aft granted, during the Continuance thereof, fhall be afcertained, fecured, raifed, levied, reco- vered and anfwered for the Ufes and Purpofes in this Aft exprefled, by fuch Rules, Ways, Means, and Methods, and under fuch Penalties and Forfeitures, and in fuch Manner and Form, as the prefent Duties upon Candles imported, or any of them, are by any Law or Statute now in force, to be afcertained, fe- cured, raifed, levied, recovered or anfwered, during the Continuance thereof refpeftively. IV. And be it enafted and declared by the Authority aforefaid. That fuch of the Duties impofed by this Aft upon imported Candles, as fliall arife, in England, Wales, and the Town of Berwick upon Tweed, fhall be under the Management of the Commiffioners and Officers of the Cuftoms in England for the time being ; and fuch of the Duties impofed by this Aft upon imported Candles, as fhall arife in Scotland, fhall be under the Management of the Commiffioners and Officers of the Cuftoms in Scotland for the time being ; and that the refpeftive Receivers General of the Cuftoms in England s.nd Scotland (or the time being, fhall, from time to time, pay, or caufe to be paid, all the Monies that they refpeftively fhall receive of the faid Duties for imported Candles (the neceflary Charges of raifing and accounting for the fame excepted) into the Receipt of her Majefty's Exchequer in England, diftinftly and apart from all other Branches of the Publick Revenues, for the Purpofes in this Aft expreflTed, and under the like Penalties, Forfeitures, and Dif- fojfi;ited, &c.
