This book is a series of narratives of the sturdy courage, extraordinary endurance, and strange adventures of the British Merchant Seaman during the War. A few examples have appeared in the newspapers; but the greater proportion of them are contained in the official archives, to which Mr. L. C. Cornford has been granted access. A complete history of the subject would fill many volumes. In "The Merchant Seaman in War," typical instances of heroism, hardship, and fighting are collected from the whole mass of available material. The officers and men of the British Mercantile Marine, in the words of Sir John Jellicoe, "have founded a new and glorious tradition in the teeth of new and undreamed-of peril, and have borne the full brunt of the enemy's illegal submarine warfare.
